How does the Geo version work?

On some routes you don’t need to scan a QR: you can start and finish with geolocation, when you’re near the start or the finish. Same as always, it works in your phone’s browser — no app to download.

Looking for the classic QR-code way? See how Vestigio works with QR.

In short: 3 steps

1

Search by location at the start

Standing at the starting point, open «Search by location». Vestigio detects where you are, finds the route, and you set up your attempt with Start.

2

Do the route

Run, walk, or ride to the finish. You can put your phone away: the timer is already recorded in Vestigio.

3

Search by location at the finish

When you arrive, use «Search by location» again. Vestigio detects you’re at the finish, stops your timer, and you see your ranking.

Step by step (in detail)

1

At the starting point

You arrive at the start of the route and, instead of looking for the QR, you open «Search by location»:

  1. Allow access to your location when the browser asks. It’s used only at that moment to find the starting point.
  2. Vestigio detects the nearest starting point. You must be within 100 meters of the route start.

2

On the Vestigio screen (before you head out)

Once the route is found, it’s exactly the same as with QR. You complete this once per attempt:

  1. Identify yourself with your email (only the first time on that device; after that Vestigio recognizes you automatically). There is no password.
  2. Choose your discipline (running, bike, trekking, etc., depending on what that route offers).
  3. Press the green «Start» button within the 30 seconds shown on screen. That’s when your timer officially starts.
After Start you can lock your phone or put it away: you don’t need to keep Vestigio open while you do the route.
3

At the finish

When you reach the finish, you open «Search by location» again. Vestigio detects you’re at the finish, finds your open attempt, stops the timer, and shows your time.

Your time is saved in the cloud and you can see that route’s ranking: compare with other athletes and improve on your next visit.

Frequently asked questions

No, only routes that have it enabled. On each challenge page you’ll see the notice «This route allows starting and finishing by geolocation». On other routes use the QR codes.

Within 100 meters of the start or finish. If you’re farther away, Vestigio will tell you so you can move closer and try again.

No. Your location is used only at the moment you search for the start or finish, and the comparison happens on your own phone: your coordinates are never sent to our servers. During the route Vestigio doesn’t know where you go — only how long you took between the two points.

Yes, search by location needs an internet connection at the start and at the finish. If your route has poor signal, use the in-app QR scanner, which does work offline and syncs your time when you get signal back.

Check that you gave the browser location permission, get closer to the start or finish, and try again. If the route has a QR installed, scanning it is always a valid alternative: both methods use the same timer and ranking.

Why use the geo version?

No physical QR

You don’t need to find the plate: being at the point is enough.

No downloads

Just your browser and the phone’s GPS.

Time in the cloud

Your time is saved when you cross the finish.

Your track is yours

Your position is compared on your phone; we never store it.
